How a Pressure Switch Works
This part plays an important part as your furnace prepares to heat your house.
Here’s what goes on after your thermostat’s call for heat:
- Your furnace’s control board begins running the draft inducer blower motor. This drains combustion gases from the heat exchanger and pulls in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
- When the pressure switch senses that plenty of air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and commands the control board to ignite the furnace.
- Your furnace ignites and supplies heat.
What Happens When a Pressure Switch Malfunctions
When your pressure switch isn’t operating the way it should, you’ll likely hear the fan start and the switch clicking a few times before the furnace switches off completely. When a part isn’t working right, your furnace will turn off to protect you.
Your furnace will tell you something is wrong with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to display error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.
You may notice short flashes or an alternating slow flash as it communicates a fault code.
